Project Overview
JDC Building Works was appointed to design and deliver a purpose-built modular facility at Donard School, Banbridge, catering specifically to students with special educational needs (SEN). The project, named Donard’s Nest, provides a safe, functional, and inclusive learning environment that supports both students and staff.
Location
The school required additional learning space designed to meet the specific needs of SEN pupils. Key considerations included:
- Purpose-built classrooms with integrated storage.
- Sensory rooms to aid student development and provide calming environments.
- Soft play areas with canopy coverings for outdoor activities.
- Secure fencing to ensure a safe and enclosed environment.
- Essential hygiene and medical facilities to support staff and students.
- Staff workspaces, including a kitchen and office area.
Project Delivery
JDC Building Works successfully delivered a 950 sq.m modular development, comprising two standalone buildings. Each building includes:
✔ Two SEN classrooms, tailored to provide structured, supportive learning spaces.
✔ 60 sq.m soft play area per building, featuring a canopy for weather protection.
✔ Two sensory rooms, including a light room for relaxation and sensory support.
✔ 1.8m gated fencing, ensuring safety and controlled access.
✔ Dedicated pupil toilets and a class store within each classroom.
✔ Laundry rooms, supporting the school’s daily operational needs.
✔ A fully fitted staff kitchen and office space in one building.
✔ A medical room, ensuring on-site care when needed.
The new Donard’s Nest facility provides a high-quality, accessible, and functional space for SEN students, enabling enhanced learning opportunities while supporting staff in delivering specialised education. The modular approach allowed for an efficient build process, minimising disruption to the school and ensuring a durable, modern learning environment.
